| Access control is a general term that is used to describe the control of people into a building or room. The term can be broken down into two basic categories: mechanical and electronic.
Mechanical Access Control
The mechanical category consists of standard door locks, exit devices with lever trims, pull plates with rim cylinders and many others.
Mechanical control also extends to the key system that is used in a facility whether it is a single door with a regular key or multiple doors and/or facilities that utilize a master keyed system.
Electronic Access Control (see also Electrified Products)
Electronic access control consists of control systems that utilize credentials such as mag cards, i-buttons, prox cards, pin codes, hand geometry or finger print to grant access to a room or facility. Access control systems may use electric strikes, EL Exit Devices, Chexit, mag locks, door position switches, and/or sirens. These systems can range from battery operated systems to hardwired systems. These access control systems can be either online or offline meaning programmed and/or monitored in real time or after manually performing audits or programming at the door lock.
Electronic access control also includes the monitoring and surveillance of the opening through either a software audit trail and/or a visual record captured by CCTV cameras and stored on video recorders for later analysis.
